Lapland Holidays Uncovered: The Best of Rovaniemi & The Arctic Wilderness - Finland

Writer's picture: czechitczechit

Husky experience

If you're dreaming of a winter wonderland holiday filled with Northern Lights, cosy igloos, and thrilling Arctic adventures, look no further than Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. It has never been easier and more affordable to visit Lapland, with 9 flights per day arriving in Rovaniemi and major low-cost operators making this magical destination more accessible than ever. Whether you're here for a magical Santa experience, heart-racing snowmobile rides, or to chase the mesmerising Aurora Borealis, this guide will cover everything you need to know for an unforgettable trip!

When to plan your holiday to Lapland

Lapland is a breathtaking destination year-round, but winter is when it truly shines.

Here’s what to expect during different seasons:

  • December - February: Peak winter season with deep snow, magical landscapes, and the best chance to experience the Northern Lights. However, Christmas time is the most crowded and expensive, so consider visiting in January or February instead.

  • March - April: Longer daylight hours, excellent skiing conditions, and still plenty of snow. Ideal for outdoor activities without extreme cold.

  • September - November: Early Northern Lights season with fewer tourists. Autumn colours (Ruska) make September a hidden gem for nature lovers.

  • May - August: Summer in Lapland offers the Midnight Sun, stunning hikes, and vibrant wildlife but no snow.

Weather & Snow Conditions

Lapland experiences extreme temperatures, ranging from 0°C to -30°C in winter. Snow typically falls from late October to April, with the thickest snow cover from December to March.

What to Pack & How to Dress for Lapland

Winter in Lapland

Lapland is stunning but extremely cold, with temperatures ranging from 0°C to -30°C in winter. Dressing appropriately is crucial for enjoying the experience fully.

Layering is Key

Wearing loose clothing actually keeps you warmer, as it traps more insulating air between the layers compared to tight-fitting clothes.

  • Base Layer: Thermal underwear (preferably merino wool)

  • Mid Layer: Fleece or wool sweaters

  • Outer Layer: Insulated, waterproof jacket and pants. I bought my jacket HERE and trousers HERE! (Also tall fit for tall girls like me).

  • Accessories: Thermal gloves, wool socks, beanie, and a neck gaiter or balaclava

  • Footwear: Waterproof, insulated boots for walking in the snow. My favourite stylish snow boots, that kept me warm HERE!

Most tour operators and activity providers provide high-quality Arctic gear, including overalls, gloves, and boots, so you do not have to worry!

How to See the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi

One of the biggest draws to Lapland is witnessing the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Here’s how to increase your chances of seeing them:

Best Tips for Northern Lights Hunting

  • Time your visit: The best months are September to April.

  • Get away from city lights: The further you are from light pollution, the better.

  • Check the weather: Clear skies are essential for spotting the aurora.

  • Use an Aurora Forecast App:

    • Aurora Forecast

    • My Aurora Forecast

    • Aurora Alerts

    • Aurora Now

  • Stay outside of Rovaniemi: For the best experience, book accommodation in the heart of nature, such as Nova Galaxy Village, where you can sleep in a glass-roof huts and watch the auroras from bed.

Where to Stay in Rovaniemi & Beyond

To fully embrace the magic of Lapland, staying outside of Rovaniemi is highly recommended.

Aurora Hut

My TOP tip: At Nova Galaxy Village, you can experience it all: daily husky cuddles, feeding reindeer every morning, and snowmobiling on a frozen river—just 15 minutes away from Rovaniemi. Plus, being away from the city lights gives you a much better chance to witness the Northern Lights right from your accommodation.
