Tips for Planning Your Zanzibar Adventure
1. When to Visit Zanzibar
The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season, from June to October and December to February.
High Season: June to October (cooler weather and less humidity).
Low Season: April and May (rainy season but fewer crowds).
Why Timing Matters: Water activities like snorkeling and diving are best during the dry months.
2. Entry Requirements
Visa: Most travellers require a visa, which can be obtained on arrival or online via the Tanzania e-Visa system, allow 10 days for e-visa to be approved. Apply HERE. There are so many website offering this, but only one above is legit.
Yellow Fever Vaccine: Mandatory if arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever.
Passport: Ensure it’s valid for at least six months from your entry date.
Mandatory insurance: Based on new regulation every non-residence has to purchase a mandatory travel insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Cooperation for additional $44, which adds extra money to your cost. You can check it HERE.
3. Currency and Payments
Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but USD is widely accepted.
Tips: Bring small USD bills for tipping and purchases.
Credit Cards: Limited use outside major hotels, so carry cash for small vendors.
4. Choosing Where to Stay
Zanzibar offers diverse accommodations depending on your preferences and I would recommend trying a few different places and accommodations during your trip:
Stone Town: Best for history and culture.
Nungwi/Kendwa: Ideal for nightlife and tide-free beaches.
Paje/Jambiani: Perfect for water sports and laid-back vibes.
Michamvi Peninsula: For secluded luxury.
5. How to Get Around
Taxis: Widely available but negotiate fares in advance.
Dala Dalas: Budget-friendly local minibuses, but not the most comfortable.
Private Drivers: Great for day trips and more flexibility.
Car Rental: Available for those confident driving on Zanzibar’s roads. Rent with a reliable company, check the car properly and be prepared to be stopped multiple times by Police, who will ask for your local licence, which rental company will obtain for you. Police in Tanzania is very corrupted, they will ask for bribes , so I recommend carrying wallets with you, one only with couple dollars and one with most of your money. If you get the fine take out the wallet only with small cash. Mind your speed as there is a maximum speed of 80kmph, but in many places it is way lower than that.
6. Packing Essentials
Beachwear: Lightweight clothing, swimwear, and flip-flops.
Cultural Respect: Pack modest clothing for visits to Stone Town and villages.
Sunscreen & Mosquito Repellent: The tropical climate calls for both.
Water Shoes: Handy for navigating coral beaches during low tide.
7. Embrace the Local Culture
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, so respecting local customs is essential.
Dress Modestly: Cover shoulders and knees when outside tourist areas.
Greetings: Learn a few Swahili phrases like “Jambo” (Hello) and “Asante” (Thank you).
Alcohol: Available at resorts and bars but avoid drinking in public.
8. Plan Activities in Advance
Popular tours like the Safari Blue Tour or a visit to Prison Island can book up quickly, so secure your spots early.
Top Activities: Snorkeling, spice tours, dhow cruises, and exploring Stone Town.
Timing: Check tides for activities like snorkeling or visiting The Rock Restaurant.
9. Stay Healthy and Safe
Tap Water: Avoid drinking it; stick to bottled water.
Malaria Precautions: Zanzibar is a malaria-risk zone, so consult your doctor about prophylactics.
Travel Insurance: Essential for unexpected medical needs or trip disruptions.
10. Budget Wisely
Zanzibar offers something for every budget:
Luxury Travellers: Expect top-tier resorts and private excursions.
Budget Travellers: Street food, local restaurants, and budget guesthouses can keep costs low.
Tipping: Common for guides, drivers, and hotel staff (usually 5-10%).
11. Respect the Environment
Zanzibar’s beauty depends on its natural resources, so practice eco-friendly tourism:
Avoid single-use plastics.
Support local businesses and sustainable tours.
Refrain from touching or damaging coral reefs, including starfish.
12. Internet and Connectivity
SIM Cards: Purchase a local SIM (like Vodacom or Airtel) for affordable data.
Wi-Fi: Available in most hotels but can be unreliable.
E-Sim card: Without hassle of getting actual SIM card. I always use this ONE.
13. Enjoy the Food Scene
Street Food: Try Zanzibari pizza and seafood at Forodhani Night Market.
Local Dishes: Don’t miss octopus curry and pilau rice.
Unique Spots: Book a table at The Rock for an iconic dining experience.
14. Capture the Moments
Zanzibar is incredibly photogenic, from Stone Town’s historic charm to the pristine beaches. Bring your camera or phone with plenty of storage and a waterproof case for beach days.
15. Take It Slow-Pole Pole
Zanzibar runs on "island time," so be patient and embrace the laid-back vibe. This is your chance to unwind and soak in the beauty of this tropical paradise. Pole pole means slowly, slowly and you will hear it a lot.
